  Surprisingly good service, good food, and really good house music.
  
  I stopped by the Stanhope Arms for dinner on a Saturday afternoon during a brief stay in the area.
  
  I have eaten at a lot of English pubs and frankly, the service and food often leave much to be desired. I also really dislike the faux old pubs that are really just tourist traps. So, you can understand that I was a little skeptical.
  
  The order process is typical for a pub, where you order at the counter and tell them which table you are seated at. You get the beer immediately and they bring your food to the table when ready.
  
  The bartender/server was genuinely friendly when taking my order and I sat down to wait for my food. I noticed that the clientele were mostly locals, with a few tourists mixed in - that's a good sign!
  
  I must mention that the canned music playing in the pub was really enjoyable. It was a mix of classic rock that several people mentioned to the bartender/owner? as a really good mix.
  
  My food arrived a short while later (beef pie with chips, peas, and gravy).  I asked for an additional condiment and the server brought it quickly and happily. The food was tasty and very enjoyable.
  
  Bottom line: If you are near the Gloucester Road tube station and need a drink or a bit of food, this is a good place to stop and visit!

  This small pub is located just south of the Gloucester Road tube station. At 5pm on a Monday, it was packed, but we lucked out to nab a small tabletop two. This is a place where you seat yourself and order drinks and food from the bar. My husband ordered and paid, and returned with his beer and an Aspall cider for me. We had about a 35 minute wait for food, reasonable considering how busy it was. My husband's fish and chips were piping hot and delicious. I ordered the supergreen salad, loaded with shaved carrot and cucumber, with a lovely lemon dressing to bring everything together. I paid for the addition of chicken and it was perfectly cooked.

  Fabulous food, fabulous drinks, Guinness on tap... what more could you ask for? The meat pies are amazing. Seriously, if you go here skip the fish and chips (which is also excellent of course) and go for the path less traveled with the meat pie. Both the steak and chicken are exceedingly past expectations. The crust is flakey and the filling is flavorful and fresh.
  
  Their drinks are pretty large. Even the hot chocolate for the kiddo was big and well presented with a large dollop of cocoa covered whipped cream. Definitely a must stop spot.

  Stayed in the area for 4 days in early August, 2019.  Stanhope Arms was the closest pub to the bad hotel we were staying in, and quickly became our go-to place for drinks, breakfast and a couple of dinners.
  
  First off, the staff is super friendly and attentive.  Like most of the pubs, place your order at the bar.  Once we figured that out, it was all good to go.  
  
  Great selection of beers.  Pub food was fantastic and a great value (considering the area).  We had breakfast there every morning before we set off for sightseeing and a couple of dinners at the end of the days.

  Popped in here at 2:00pm on a Tuesday and had to order from the bar due to no wait staff. We picked up a couple pints and the regular fish and chips and the big fish and chips. The latter gives you bread plus some nice curry sauce. Both plates were cooked well, with crunchy chips and crispy beer batter cod fish. The tarter sauce was small and not that tasty, but thankfully the fish didn't need it.
